Germination Cannabis Seeds: How to do

Germination stage of Marijuana plant: How to germinate Cannabis Seeds

Welcome to the second Episode of the “Cannabis Cultivation Manual” about Germination Stage of Cannabis Plant! Today we will find out which are the best (and safest) methods for germinate cannabis seeds, and how to germinate Cannabis seeds in the optimal growing conditions for this delicate first stage of development! So, here we go!

germination stage cannabis plants

The Germination phase, similar to the Cloning (or Cutting) Phase, is the most delicate phase for each plant, including the Cannabis plant. Therefore, the purchase of excellent seeds alone will not guarantee a profitable harvest: it is necessary to pay extreme attention to what the plant needs in this initial step.

If temperature and humidity play a fundamental role, nutrients, the correct light and the total absence of currents count as well. In fact, it is very likely that if even just one of the parameters is not set in an optimal way, the plant could die or suffer severe stress. A drastic slowdown in plant growth, or the onset of deformation of the leaves can be symptoms of this type of initial stress.

It is therefore essential that, before opening the seed packet, the cultivation equipment has already been purchased and is fully available: each tool will be meticulously listed throughout these pages. See our article about basic instructions of Cannabis growing to be ready for the show!

1° Rule: record the environmental parameters

It is essential to have purchased all the tools necessary for detecting the environmental parameters of cultivation.

Generally, a simple and banal thermohygrometer will suffice for newcomers to marijuana cultivation.

If, on the other hand, you are a little more experienced, the advice is to get a PH and EC tester, which can be purchased in any growshop at low prices (mandatory tool if you work in hydroponics).

For patients, researchers, geneticists or wholesalers, having some information about CO2 delivery systems might be for you!

Optimal temperature and humidity in the Germination stage of Cannabis seeds and plants

Each cannabis seed is a life of its own, just like us humans; and that is why a single parameter for each seed cannot be guaranteed. Each strain responds to unique and exclusive environmental conditions and parameters, traceable in its genetic composition.

Generally speaking, we could say that almost all Cannabis seeds germinate in a temperature range of 15 ° -28 ° (18 ° -21 ° is the optimal parameter), and in a humidity range of 55% – 98.5%.

A classic germination kit (also perfect for cloning) is the best tool to guarantee the right parameters without exposing the plants to possible temperature changes.

PH of the irrigation water in Germination Stage of Cannabis Plant

The pH of the water with which we will irrigate or fertilize our cannabis plants is an important parameters.

It can be measured in different ways, but if we want to be as accurate as possible we have to use a specific digital meter for PH (same thing for EC). The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, where 0 is the most acidic value and 14 the most alkaline (or basic): 7 is considered neutral.

There are three values that are important to know before trying to correct the pH of the earth.
1) The pH of the irrigation water
2) The pH of the same water after adding fertilizers or stimulators
3) The pH value of the earth.

In the Germination phase, the optimal pH in hydroponic (or aeroponic) crops must be around 5.8 – 6.0.
In the Germination phase, the optimal pH in soil crops must be around 6.2; for pure coconut fiber crops, the pH tinned in this delicate phase is about 5.8 / 6.3

EC of Irrigation Water in Germination Stage of Cannabis Plant

EC, or electrical conductivity, is another measure that helps us determine the amount of minerals present in irrigation water.
The more nutrients are present in the irrigation water, the higher the EC reading of the waste water will be in the EC test.
In the germination phase, the EC must be around between a minimum of 0.6 and a maximum of 0.9.

Grow light in the germination stage of Cannabis plant

Is possible germinate cannabis seeds under 600w MH lamps? yes, it is. But it would be a profound waste of electricity at best. In the worst case, the light could be so powerful as to be counterproductive to the very health of young plants, which could suffer a slowdown in growth (as they could die dried or dehydrated).

The best choice is to have a special lamp suitable for the germination and cloning phase of cannabis plants.
Simple white light neons might also be fine if you are growing around 4 plants, however our advice is to buy a CFL lamp (6400 ° K white spectrum).

The first time you try to grow cannabis it is very likely that the seedlings will not exceed the first month of life, but you will not have to give up: over time you will get the right experience. Optimal substrate in Cannabis germination phase

There is no optimal substrate for the germination of cannabis seeds, however it is essential that:

– the chosen soil is not strongly acidic (5.2-6.8 PH are the standard parameters);
– it is not rich in mineral nutrients (due to residues from previous crops). Too many nutrients in this phase would kill the young plant;
– it is a sufficiently draining soil, but which at the same time can remain sufficiently humid;
– that it is light and airy.

If you have not already done so, we recommend that you take a look at the previous chapter of our introduction to the “Cannabis Cultivation Handbook” concerning “Cannabis substrates: soil, coco or hydroponic“, and more in depth “Substrate Quality and Characteristics. in Cannabis Cultivation

9 most common mistakes in the germination stage of Cannabis plant

the nine main causes of failure of novice growers are:

  • Allow the seeds to germinate for too long;
  • Allow the substrate surface to dry;
  • Let the paper dry where it started to germinate;
  • Make them sprout directly in the pot or on the ground at an incorrect depth;
  • An environmental condition of unsuitable temperature and humidity;
  • Having planted the seed in the wrong position;
  • Having planted two or more seeds in the same pot;
  • Keeping the lights too low or too high;
  • Continuous handling of seeds before, during and after germination.

3 Best ways “How to germinate Cannabis seeds”

Classic Cannabis germination method “in the ground”

The simplest method of all, is the one we do not recommend the most. You simply have to put the seed in full earth or in pots about half centimeter below the surface. Hydrating it for 12 hours in water before burying it can help the germination process.

Even if you want to grow Cannabis outdoors in full ground, indoor germination in pots is highly recommended. Proceed only after decanting in full soil, reducing the possibility that the various environmental dangers can affect the health of the slender plants (climatic , or animals in the case of “Guerrilla Crops)

We recommend that you pay close attention not to bury the seeds too deeply (no more than one centimeter), or never let the earth dry out or stagnate with water during the germination period. Any carelessness at this stage would ensure the failure of the entire crop.

Water’s Glass Cannabis Germination method

it is a simple germination method but less reliable and effective than absorbent paper; it consists in the simple soaking (rehydration) of the seeds until the opening of the first root, which usually takes place within 48 hours.

A few drops of rooting solution can be added to facilitate the germination process (we recommend, without exaggerating the quantity!)

“Annibale’s Method for Cannabis Germination – absorbent paper & cellophane (or two plates)”

This is the most reliable and safe method. Consists in hydrating absorbent paper folded in two, squeezing it carefully with your hands in order to obtain a thick wet handkerchief, but not impregnated with water. Then get a deep plate and cellophane, if you do not have the film, just use an additional deep plate (see below)

Gently lay the seeds on one of the halves of your paper towel. Then close with the other half of the paper, spacing them well, giving a slight pressure on the paper where they are, so as to make them adhere favoring the condition of perfect humidity necessary for the germination of Cannabis seeds.

Then cover the plate with a layer of cellophane with holes in it (if not available, simply use another deep plate turned upside down, closing the lid)

Keep in the dark and periodically check the seeds (in 24-60 hours they should have all hatched), lightly moisten the paper if necessary.

Place the seeds in the center of the pot in small holes, subsequently covering with a few millimeters of soil.

That’s all for this chapter about germination stage of cannabis plant. We want to leave you with one last piece of advice, hoping it was helpful to read this article: manipulating the seeds / seedlings as little as possible can be the trick to success. Now, you know how to do a correct cannabis seeds germination, and you are able to do it!
